“Why We Crave Horror Movies”

Filed under: Uncategorized — koletteh at 1:45 pm on Wednesday, March 31, 2010

And again, we had to read another essay. This one had less meaning to me but here’s what I read:

In this essay, Stephen King writes about the thrills people get out of horror movies. He writes how peple are “mentally ill” in that they crave this grossness. The ability to say that they were not afraid and they can handle anything is a boost to their self-esteem. Stephen talks about two different kinds of emotions: civil and anti-civil. The civil emotions are those of love, friendship, loyalty and kindness. Those emotions are are “exercised” every day. The anti civil emotions are the sick and dirty emotions. These emotions are then exercised by watching horror movies.

I have never seen a horror movie before, so I would not know the feeling after watching one. I will be truthful and say that I scare easily and most action movies get me worked up. I do believe that peole who get a thrill out of watching horror movies are mentally ill! The few parts of advertisements I have seen were enough for me. After reading this essay, I do believe I will just stay away from horror and all the emotions involved!

“Black Men and Public Space”

Filed under: Uncategorized — koletteh at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, March 31, 2010

We had to read an essay in college comp. and here is what I discovered:

This essay is about a black man who recognizes how most white people are stereo type of black people. To anyone he got near, especially at night, they would identify him as a muggar. They would increase their pace and hurriedly lose him. This was the case espcially with white women who are vulnerable to street violence. This black man found a solution to his problem by humming popular classical music. He found out that white people do not recognize muggars as singning  bright, relaxing classical tunes.

This essay hit home. If I were walking down the streets of Chicago late at night and a black man was slowling walking along the street I would turn around and run as fast as I could. I mean, if the guy was scary looking and all and I sensed some trouble, I would fear for my life! After I read this story though, I realized that it is wrong to immediately assume that a scary looking black man is dangerous. My mom always told me to never talk to strangers, so as long as I don’t talk to him I should be ok! I hope that someday white people figure out that the world isn’t all about them!

Spring Break!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — koletteh at 11:57 am on Wednesday, March 31, 2010

I am bored today and really anxcious to get out of school for a couple of days. Finanly spring break has arrived! The weather is beautiful, too beautiful to be in school! I have alot of fun things planned for spring break and I am really excited.

Thursday immediately after school, I plan to go tanning. After that I will most likely go home and have some dinner. At four o’clock, I have a super fun appointment with my friend Jodi. ;) She is an amzingly talented singer and I get the privalage of playing piano for her! I love listening to her voice; it awlays sounds earthshattering! On Thursday night I have church and after that I will probably hang out with friends.

On Friday, I will hopefully be able to sleep in. In the mid morning me and my friends are going fourwheeling. We did this a couple of times this past summer and I enjoyed it alot. I am looking forward to racing and having a blast. I am not sure what my whole friday is going to consist of but it will definitely be with friends all day long. Maybe we will play some volleyball or basketball. We could possibly have a bonfire or grill some burgers. Whatever happens that day, I am sure I will have fun. What could be better than hanging out with friends all day long!!

Saturday will most likely be my spring cleaning day. I have a pretty long list of things that I want to get done before the rest of the school year comes to a close. It will be a busy day at home cleaning and just enjoying the family and their company. Saturday night I have to work at the ranch.

Monday will probably be a continuation of Saturday. I will probably have to write my college comp paper because I highly doubt that I will do it before this. At three o’clock I have soccer practice. That will be nice to get away from home again since I will have been there since Saturday!

Well that is how my spring break is planned to go. I’m pretty sure there will be some changes, because things rarely go as planned. That is ok though, it makes things interesting!

Questions About Countries…

Filed under: Uncategorized — koletteh at 11:09 pm on Tuesday, March 23, 2010

I obviously do not know much about the lifestyles of any other country than the U.S. I am interested in a couple different things!

Australia: What is the average temperature year round? I would really love to go to Australia for my honeymoon! What would you suggest be the most beautiful sight to see?

United Kingdom: What is a typical school day for you? Is your school big into sports or any other activities?

Norway: What is your main language and what are some of the holidays you celebrate? What kind of food do you eat?

I could probably go on and on asking a person questions about their lifestyle. Things like that are of great interest to me and I hope I can learn something from this blog!

The Best MUST SEE Places In Iowa

Filed under: Uncategorized — koletteh at 10:53 pm on Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Iowa is by far the best state in the United States of America!;) There is so much to do and the weather is always beautiful! You get your taste of the hot sun and of course the bitter snow. To tell the truth, it took me a little to think about what are some “must see” places to visit in my state. I have never taken the time to discover/explore my state. Here is what I came up with:

Le Mars, Iowa, is known as the Ice Cream Capitol of othe world. In Le Mars you can get a taste of some of the most delicious Blue Bunny ice cream!

Arnolds Park is a lakeside amusement park with many thrilling rides. Before you leave, I’d suggest you buy their special-the nutty bar.

Okoboji is town inlcuding a popular manmade lake. You can enjoy the outdoors by boating, fishing, tubing, skiing, and just laying out on the beach. You can pull up your camper and tent out or stay in a  lovely lakeside resort.

Living History Farms in Des Moines portrays the way our ancestors used to live. You can spend your day walking or riding around the whole farms getting a taste of an assortment of different years in Iowa’s history.

The Port of Dubuque is located in Dubuque, Iowa, along the Mississippi River. The town of Dubuque itself is filled with much natural beauty. You can bike, hike, ride an authentic paddleboat, tour museums, or stroll downtown to buy some antiques and other gifts. Dubuque is filled with many bed and breakfast inns, hotels, or beautfuls resorts.

Those are all a couple of the many places that can be entertaining in Iowa. It is definitely a great place to live! I totally suggest you come visit Iowa, the Hawkeye State!

Bumper Sticker Humor

Bumper stickers can be the most entertaining thing as your driving down the road. There are so many random, funny sayings. I searched the internet and found some humorous bumper stickers:

Help your local Search & Rescue. Get lost!

Crap! This is a terrible time for the meds to wear off.

Say “NO” to drugs. That will bring the prices down.

An Apple a day keeps Windows away.

Rock is dead. Long live paper and scissors.

On your mark, get set, go away!

If you want breakfast in bed, sleep in the kitchen

Without ME, it’s just AWESO

Hang up and drive!

Ever stop to think, and forget to start again?

If you can read this, I can hit my brakes and sue you.

I drive the speed limit. If you don’t like it, call a cop!

I is a college student

My country invaded Iraq and all I got was this expensive gas.

Be nice to nerds, chances are you’ll end up working for one!

I’d rather be right than politically correct!

Silly boys, trucks are for girls

A synonym is a word you can use if you can’t spell the other one!

Energizer bunny arrested, charged with battery

The more people I meet, the more I like my dog.

CAUTION: Blonde Thinking!

I HAD a life…but my job ate it!

Don’t Steal. The government hates competition.

4 out of 3 people have trouble with fractions

Everyone is born right handed… only the gifted overcome it

Well, that is all for now! If you know some more funny or interesting bumper stickers go ahead and add them!

Why my blog is interesting…

In the  March 2010 Challenge I was asked to write about why my blog is interesting. To tell the truth, I don’t think that my blog is interesting. My blog is filled with events that have happened in my life recently. I tend to blog on some of the more fun events that happen. The most interesting post on my blog, in my opinion is definitely the post titled ”Are you smarter than a fifth grader?”. I have a link to an online game that tests your knowledge. By playing this game, you will recognize whether or not you should be back in grade school relearning things you’ve should of learned before. You may also get a kick out of my most adorable pink panda. I named her Paris because it made for great alliteration!=)  Anytime you want, you can feed Paris some delicious leaves! If you have not already, you should also check out my post on Aidan Davis. He is one of the best 11 year old dancers you will ever see! The scenery on my blog is quite dull. Someday, in my spare time, I will have to spruce it up with something more interesting!!=)

So, that is all I could come up with, when it comes to interesting things on my blog. If you find something that you find interesting or like or dislike, leave a comment. I’d love to hear about it!!=)

Boys State Basketball Ridiculousness

Filed under: Uncategorized — koletteh at 12:55 pm on Monday, March 1, 2010

This weekends was the best weekend ever! The boys baketball team defeated unity in the substate game, and we are now off to state. This week is going to be the longest, roughest week ever! There are no exciting events happening and just the fact that next week we could hardly have school is real distracting!

This morning during chapel, I heard some terrible, shocking, ridiculous news! If we win on Monday and Thursday, we will have to go to school on Friday for half a day. Now sure that is real “smart” so we can have a spring break, but really, who is going to come back from De Moines to go to school for half a day?? The whole point of state is to not have school!! We have the best, rarest opportunity to stay overnight in motels, and have a blast with friends! This could be our spring break for crying out loud! The only people that are going to come to school will be those who are not going to state. What parents want to drive their kids back and forth from De Moines, like its only a couple miles down the road?!?! I believe this is the worst idea anyones ever had in a very long time! My mother even thought it was the most ridiculous thing, and she said she woud definiately excuse me from class! It is a big waste of money for people to go back and forth from Des Moines three times a week. After this chapel, I was distraught and furious. I am pretty sure no students are going to come back for HALF a day of school.

Well, that is my opinion on this crazy, no nonsense idea of coming back to school on Friday, if we go to the championship game!=D

Freecell

Filed under: Uncategorized — koletteh at 10:27 am on Friday, February 26, 2010

Freecell is one of the best challenging card games! I have always played games such as solitaire and spider solitaire, but after awhile those games get quite boring. Freecell on the other hand, NEVER gets boring=D Each game has a different strategy you have to use in order to win. The point of the game is to get, starting with Ace’s, all the cards in order of the same suit. All the cards begin at the bottom in a random order, and you can stack them as you do in solitaire with every other color. You get four free boxes where you can put any card you want, but the more cards you have in those spaces, the less cards your allowed to move. The first time i discovered this game, I was furious, because it was impossible to win! It took me quite of few tries to figure out how to pull it off. It looks really difficult and I remember looking at it and closing it up immediately. I promise you, after you have won once, it is by far the best game. Its a challenge and once you win you feel so accomplished!!=) I play freecell every single day, and if I don’t have time, then I quick get a game in before I go to bed at night! My advice to you is, if you haven’t already, discover this amazing game of FREECELL!!=D
